Two physical therapy methods for neck pain treatment

Neck Pain Physical Therapy

Neck pain is much more common than many people may think. For instance, a report published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed that up to 75% of adults will experience neck pain at some time in their life. To help the huge number of people with neck discomfort, physical therapists have developed many helpful physical therapy methods. In fact, there are two physical therapy methods in particular that can help treat neck pain.

1.  Joint mobilization

You may be unaware that you have joints in your neck, but you do. In fact, two facet joints are present at the rear of almost every spinal vertebra, and this includes the vertebrae in your neck. However, these joints can become inflamed or damaged thanks to injuries or conditions like osteoarthritis.

In turn, facet joint issues can lead to pain and difficulty moving your neck. Joint mobilization is a physical therapy method designed to counter this type of neck pain. Therapists use their hands to move the neck in specific ways during this form of therapy. Often, this includes movements that the patient may not be able to make themselves. However, the movements of joint mobilization have been shown to loosen facet joints and reduce pain.

2.   Soft tissue mobilization

Another physical therapy method that’s often used to treat neck pain is soft tissue mobilization. Like joint mobilization, a physical therapist will use their hands to move your neck in various ways during soft tissue mobilization. However, these movements are designed to target soft tissue such as muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The reason this therapy method can be beneficial is that it helps release tension that has built up in soft tissue. Releasing this tension can have several benefits for patients. For instance, tension release often allows for increased blood flow, and this can help neck structures get more oxygen and nutrients. Relieving soft tissue tension can also decrease pain in the patient’s neck.
