Severe, or even minor, neck pain can affect many parts of life that we generally take for granted. Whether driving your car, working in your yard or playing with your kids, neck pain can make these basic parts of life difficult or even impossible.
If you have neck pain that has not improved after more than a few days to a week or has suddenly worsened, it’s important to seek medical attention. A doctor can help you develop a treatment plan that involves different methods designed to help you find relief.
To help patients in El Paso, Texas, learn about their treatment options, the caring team at Border Therapy Services is sharing the following overview of common therapeutic methods. Three common types of neck pain treatment
Doctors or other neck pain specialists will often recommend these types of neck pain treatment options:
- Hot and cold compression therapy — This type of neck pain treatment involves alternating use of a heat source, like a heating pad, with an ice pack or other cold compress to relieve pain at home. The idea is that heat helps relax tense muscles and promote circulation while cold helps reduce inflammation and pain by temporarily numbing the area. It is generally recommended to alternate every 10 to 20 minutes for about an hour at a time.
- Therapeutic massage — By relaxing tense or spastic muscles, a trained massage therapist or physical therapist can help relieve neck pain by taking pressure off of compressed nerves.
- Physical therapy exercises — A physical therapist can instruct neck pain sufferers in exercises to stretch and strengthen the neck, helping to stabilize the area and relieve pain. Posture correction exercises can also be performed as well, which helps to evenly distribute the weight of the head and relieve pressure on the neck.
Every person and case of neck pain is different, and finding relief often takes some time to find the most effective combination of neck pain treatments for an individual person.
